Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m Laura and I live in Knoxville, TN. I am a full-time graphic designer but I still have a desire to create things with my hands once I get home. I love my job but I don’t always get to design as freely as I would like.I use etsy as my outlet to do whatever my heart desires. I have a 10.5 month old baby girl so life has really gotten busy in the past year. I have to really plan out my time and sometimes put in some late nights to make sure my orders get out and I keep my customers happy

.

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?

I create handmade mobiles. I hope to venture into some other areas in the near future but it is all about finding those extra hours in the day.

How did you get started in your line of business?

I had originally opened another shop selling handbags. I loved doing that but quickly found that etsy is flooded with so many that is was difficult to stand out.

Then I found out one of my best friends was expecting her first baby about 2 and half years ago. I wanted to make her something really special that the baby could grow with. I ended up making her a bird mobile. I had so much fun making it that I made a couple of extras just for fun. I decided to put one up on etsy just to see if there was any interest and it sold that day. Since then I have been adding onto the design, enhancing it and making it better. The mobile market isn’t quite as heavy on etsy and it is easier for my products to be seen.

Describe your creative process.

My creative process always starts out with me picking out the fabrics. This is my favorite part. I absolutely love fabric and I love seeing how different patterns and texture can work together. I also do lots of custom orders so those help to challenge me and keep me on my toes to really customize the mobile for my customers.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Once again I love fabric, so I am inspired by almost any textile around me. Whether it be a rug or a blouse I will be inspired to try new colors together and think outside the box.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

I love my fabric branch bird mobiles (www.etsy.com/listing/85822330/bird-mobile-fabric-branches-aqua-yellow

). They aren’t the most popular item in my shop but they are my favorite. Having the branches wrapped in fabric adds that extra bit of pop and color to the mobile to really make it a conversation piece.

How do you promote your work?

I could definitely use some improvement in this area. I mainly just try and keep my items fresh in my shop and at the top of the search engine. I have recently started using twitter and facebook more to get the word out. Word of mouth has done alot for me as well. If you make a solid product, people will talk about it.

What is one of your most important lessons you’ve learned since starting your business?

I have learned that you really need to enjoy whatever you are creating because once you become busy it will be just another job if you don’t really love it. I find myself excited still to make new mobiles and try new things.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

My advice would be to take great pictures. I think the picture is the number one thing to bring someone to your shop. You can have a great product but if it isn’t photographed well, it will get lost easily.
Also, I believe it is very important to provide great quality service. I let my customers know the status of their order immediately and take care of any problems that may arise asap.
